How to Make Homemade Sour Mix
Since we all have been staying home a lot more lately, this is a perfect opportunity for you to learn how to whip up some cocktails! This classic staple will have you enjoying more cocktails at home before you know it! Sour mix is extremely versatile. You can use it to make margaritas, long islands, lemon drop martinis, and whiskey sours! A small batch will stay fresh for five days in the fridge and a month if you choose to freeze it! Seriously, you’ll never want to go back to pre-mixed sour mix ever again. Here are the tools you will need:
A cutting board
Fruit squeezer/zester
Simple Syrup/Agave Syrup
Cocktail strainer
Lemons and Limes ( for a small batch I used 6 lemons and 8 limes)
Standard kitchen measuring cup
First, you will need some tools. A cutting board to cut fruit, fresh lemon and lime, a fruit squeezer, a simple egg for the egg whites (this is optional egg whites just help reduce the acidity from the fruit), you can use simple syrup or agave syrup for the sweetener, and lastly a cocktail strainer to shake and strain out seeds and pulp.
After you have collected all your tools it’s mixin’ time! Keep in mind that the sugar or agave can be mixed according to your liking. I like more or a fresh sour taste, therefore I use less sweetener.
Zest all of your fruit into your cocktail strainer. You will need 1 cup of fresh lemon juice and 1 cup of fresh lime juice. One cup of fresh lemon juice is 6 lemons and one cup of fresh limes is 10 limes.
Next add 1/4 cup of simple syrup or agave to the cocktail strainer. If sweeter sour mix is more your style, simply taste and add more to your liking.
The OPTIONAL step here is to add egg whites. I like to add one egg white to help reduce the acidity of the fruit and help the ingredients blend together! After all of this is done, you place your cap on the strainer and SHAKE IT LIKE A POLAROID PICTURE! Just kidding, but seriously give it a very good shake and then strain into a fresh container. VOILA! You are now a bartender and have created your first batch of sour mix! ENJOY!
